📰 News #1: Pakistan Monsoon Floods 2025 – A Climate Disaster Unfolding

🔹 Summary:

In July 2025, Pakistan is witnessing one of its worst natural disasters in recent years. Monsoon rains, combined with rapid glacial melting, have caused severe flooding in multiple regions. So far, at least 104 people have been killed, and more than 200 injured. Thousands have lost their homes, and large parts of northern Pakistan are under water.

🔹 Affected Areas:

The most impacted areas include:

  • Islamabad

  • Punjab

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Swat, Dir, Chitral)

  • Gilgit-Baltistan

  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir

  • Eastern Balochistan

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA):

  • 10.5 km of roads and 9 bridges have been destroyed

  • Over 135 houses have been fully washed away

  • Many areas are still inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure

🔹 Cause:

The floods are not only caused by rain but also by glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). As Pakistan has more than 7,000 glaciers, rising temperatures due to climate change have accelerated glacial melting. When these glacial lakes burst, they send torrents of water downhill, devastating everything in their path.

🔹 Relief Efforts:

NDMA and the Pakistan Army have launched large-scale rescue and relief operations. However, continued rainfall and damaged roads are making relief delivery slow. Emergency shelters have been set up, but thousands are still waiting for help, especially in remote mountainous areas.

🔹 Climate Perspective:

Despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, Pakistan is among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. Experts say the country is experiencing the direct consequences of global warming — and this is just the beginning.

🔹 Conclusion:

This is not just a seasonal flood — it is a climate emergency. Pakistan needs not only immediate help but long-term planning, better climate-resilient infrastructure, and strong advocacy for climate justice on global platforms.
